The government has confirmed six official fan zones will be set up across Nairobi for Harambee Stars’ final Group A clash against Zambia at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) this Sunday, August 17.
This after Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya directed the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to create designated areas for ticketless fans, a move aimed at reducing congestion at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The decision comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) cut the stadium’s capacity by 40 percent, limiting attendance to 27,000 due to security concerns.
CS Mvurya said the fan zones were confirmed after a meeting in Nairobi with key security stakeholders, including Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja. He explained that the zones were strategically located in select Nairobi neighbourhoods to give supporters an atmosphere closely matching the stadium experience.
The six fan zones will be set up at Uhuru Park, Lucky Summer (Ngomongo area, behind Kasarani Stadium), Dandora Stadium, Utalii’s Stima Club, Jacaranda Grounds, and Kibera DC Grounds.
The high-stakes clash against Zambia will determine whether Kenya secures the top spot in Group A, finishes second, or faces elimination. Despite the Harambee Stars currently leading with seven points, a win remains crucial to guarantee progress.
Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board has charged Football Kenya Federation (FKF) with a string of security and safety infractions following Kenya’s CHAN 2024 match against Morocco at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 10, 2025, when ticketless fans overpowered security officers and forced their way into the stadium, defying CAF’s strict security and safety regulations. CAF also issued a warning over the use of tear gas at match venues.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, CAF said it had found Kenya guilty and fined FKF USD 50,000 (Ksh6.4 million). The continental body further cautioned that repeated failure to meet safety standards could result in Kenya’s national team matches being relocated to another venue. It directed FKF to boost security by deploying adequate personnel around stadium perimeters and enforcing road closures on match days.
The Federation (FKF) is now calling on Kenyans to rally behind the Harambee Stars in the remaining CHAN matches by supporting them responsibly.
FKF urged fans to attend Sunday’s clash against Zambia only if they have genuine tickets, warning that crowd trouble has already cost the country heavily in fines and could lead to further sanctions.
“Let’s support Harambee Stars responsibly on Sunday against Zambia & in all upcoming games. Crowd trouble is costing us dearly, and we are facing heavy sanctions. Only show up at Kasarani if you have a genuine ticket. Tusiharibu game tumestruggle sana kuijenga,” the federation said in a statement.
