Former Chief Justice David Maraga, the United Green Movement’s presidential flag-bearer, has officially unveiled the leadership team for his 2027 State House bid.
In a Monday announcement, Maraga revealed that his presidential campaign secretariat will operate out of Kileleshwa, Nairobi, under the joint leadership of Mkawasi Mcharo and David Makali.
The appointments mark a critical step forward as Maraga builds momentum for his campaign, tasking the duo with driving the campaign’s policy direction, communication strategy, and voter engagement, both locally and across the diaspora.
Mcharo to Lead Strategy and Diaspora Affairs
Mcharo steps into the role of Co-Executive Director of the Presidential Campaign Secretariat, where she will direct strategy, policy, and diaspora affairs.
Maraga praised her as a scholar and governance expert who brings more than 20 years of leadership experience to the campaign.
Her track record includes spearheading initiatives for social justice, advocating for dual citizenship, and helping establish Kenya’s first presidential debate.
Mcharo previously chaired Kenya Community Abroad, a US-based organization where she championed the rights of Kenyans living overseas and pushed for the practical implementation of constitutional dual citizenship provisions.
A published writer whose work has appeared in local and international outlets, Mcharo holds a Master of Arts in Theatre Arts from Hunter College, a Master of Arts in Diplomacy from Norwich University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from the University of Nairobi. Her doctoral research at Howard University explores political belonging and the emergence of nations.
Makali Takes Charge of Campaign Messaging
Veteran journalist and communication specialist David Makali takes charge of the campaign’s public messaging as Communications Coordinator.
Makali brings a 30-year legacy in media and civil society to the team. The campaign highlighted his expertise as a political analyst and editor specializing in governance, human rights, and press freedom, work that earned him the 2025 Press Freedom Warrior Award from the Kenya Editors Guild.
Makali’s career reflects a personal cost for his journalism. In 1994, authorities imprisoned him over his reporting, prompting Amnesty International to designate him a Prisoner of Conscience.
In 1999, attackers abducted him in Nairobi after he published an investigative report exposing senior government officials in drug trafficking and money laundering. He later recounted that his captors tortured him before abandoning him in Karura Forest.
Makali holds a Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Moi University.
