Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua urged tourists and investors to avoid Kenya, blaming the country’s rising insecurity squarely on the government.
On Sunday, during a church service at the ACK St. Thomas Cathedral in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga Central Constituency, he said Kenya no longer felt safe and told visitors and businesses to postpone their plans until next year.
“Our tourists are not safe in our country. There are too many goons. Tourists should suspend their visits until next year,” he said. “Investors should keep away from Kenya. We are telling investors to stay away until next year.”
The comments followed the DCP’s decisive win in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election days earlier. Gachagua used that victory to renew his attacks on President William Ruto and to claim that the 2027 General Election will become a direct contest between the President and the Mt Kenya community.
Regarding the Ol Kalou result, Gachagua thanked residents for what he described as defending the dignity of the Mt Kenya people. He said the entire country had been watching the constituency to see which political direction it would choose.
“Despite all those goodies, they voted for the right candidate,” he said, adding that he believed the government poured resources into the campaign. He claimed that President William Ruto had rolled out development worth 1.4 billion shillings and that another 1.2 billion shillings went toward influencing voters. He further alleged that one woman told him she received 90,000 shillings in campaign handouts.
Based on his own assessment, he said each vote secured by Ruto’s side in Ol Kalou cost about Ksh 3 million.
“Hiyo ilikuwa rehearsal,” he said, describing the by-election as a preview for 2027. “Uchaguzi ya Ol Kalou ilikuwa mashindano ya William Ruto na community. 2027 will be a contest between William Ruto and the community.”
Gachagua then doubled down on his message of Mt Kenya unity, arguing that Ruto can only win by dividing the region. He claimed Ruto enlisted allies, including Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku, to split the area.
“The only way William Ruto comes to power is by dividing the mountain. Once we are united as a mountain, as a community, our votes added to other Kenyans, ataenda nyumbani,” he said. “We cannot divide this mountain. If we are divided, huyu jamaa atarudi.”
He said the DCP would serve as the platform for that unity and asked the congregation for loyal support, saying a committed group of members would carry his agenda.
“Chama ni DCP,” he said. “Mkinipea wajumbe 100 wale loyal, mtakuwa mmenisaidia.”
Gachagua added that he would take his message to the wider Mt Kenya region after he finished his current engagements. He named Meru and Embu as some of his next stops.
“Mimi nikimaliza kazi iko nayo Wamunyoro, nitaenda Meru na Embu siku sita,” he said. “Niende niongee na watu wetu tuelewane.”
He also accused President William Ruto of betrayal, alleging that the President had removed young people from jobs and deployed hired goons. He further claimed that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen coordinated the groups.
“Murkomen ndiye anapanga goons,” he alleged.
