The Wantam Movement has launched a digital voting platform that will let supporters in Kenya and abroad select the movement’s preferred presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The platform, called the Wantam Digital Election System, aims to create a public-led process for choosing the movement’s presidential flagbearer as political activity increases before the next election.
Instead of relying on the usual negotiations where party leaders often decide candidates, the movement says the online vote will give ordinary supporters a direct say. It says supporters will identify the candidate they believe can lead the country.
Organisers say voting starts on July 25 at 6:00 a.m. and ends on July 26 at 6:00 p.m. They also stated that vote totals will appear live as the voting continues.
Wantam Movement Committee Chairperson Francis Masinde said the digital election aims to promote transparency and give supporters a role in shaping the movement’s political direction.
“The process will be conducted in phases, with the top five candidates from the initial digital vote progressing to a public flagbearer debate where they will outline their vision for the country ahead of a final round of voting,” Masinde said.
The Wantam Movement will run its digital selection process in three stages. First, supporters will vote online for their preferred presidential aspirant from a list of 16 candidates. The five candidates who secure the most votes will advance to a public flagbearer debate to present their vision and plans for the country. After the debate, supporters will cast a final vote to choose the movement’s preferred presidential candidate and running mate.
The 16 presidential aspirants on the Wantam Digital Election System include Martha Karua, Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, David Maraga, Fred Matiang’i, Okiya Omtatah, Edwin Sifuna, George Wajackoyah, Reuben Kigame, Ndindi Nyoro, Jimmy Wanjigi, George Natembeya, Justin Muturi, Eugene Wamalwa, Willis Otieno, and Boniface Mwangi.
Masinde explained that developers built the platform to ensure transparency, allowing supporters to track the voting process through live updates. He added that Kenyans living in the diaspora are also eligible to participate.
The launch comes as Kenya’s 2027 presidential race begins to take shape, with political leaders and emerging alliances ramping up their grassroots mobilization efforts across the country. Masinde believes that allowing both local and diaspora supporters to vote, combined with live updates, will build strong confidence in the process.
While the Wantam Digital Election System plays no constitutional role in determining Kenya’s official presidential candidates, the movement hopes the initiative will identify a leader who can unite supporters around a shared political agenda ahead of the 2027 polls. This digital exercise takes place amidst intensifying political activity as potential presidential contenders position themselves and various coalitions compete for support before the next General Election.
