Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have begun a manhunt for an armed, interconnected gang behind a series of brazen daylight robberies targeting high-end restaurants and shopping malls in Nairobi’s Westlands and in Watamu on the coast.
Forensic reviews of communication trails, phone records, and digital activity before and after the attacks indicate that suspects in both areas are closely linked. Investigators believe they operate as part of the same organized criminal syndicate.
Police say the group used matching tactics during the robberies, drawing concealed pistols at the same time to surprise diners and shoppers.
The syndicate primarily targets high-value personal electronics, jewelry, and cash, taking these valuables from their victims.
Investigators said they made a breakthrough after CCTV footage captured clear images of both incidents. The material helped forensic teams build detailed profiles of the gunmen involved. DCI Director Mohamed Amin said the agency had already profiled suspects who are on the run and expects to close in soon.
“We have already made some major breakthroughs. Our team has managed to profile and get the identities of the suspects who are on the run, but we will soon catch up with…we are working on cracking these criminal gangs,” DCI Director Mohamed Amin said.
Police also reported recovering the getaway motorcycle used by the suspects in the Watamu Mall robbery.
A special unit of elite DCI detectives is now tracking the identified suspects across multiple counties. The DCI has urged the public to come forward with any information, photographs, or videos and to report tips to the nearest police station or through its toll-free hotlines.
