The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has launched a sharp critique of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of fixating on President William Ruto and of seeking to undermine the Kenya Kwanza administration.
In an open letter released on Tuesday, UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire and Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan said Uhuru never accepted Ruto’s win in the 2022 General Election and has been working against the current government.
“We have heard you loud and clear. First, temper your intense bitterness, fierce jealousy, endless envy, and toxic obsession with William Ruto,” the letter read in part.
The party also accused Uhuru of passing on a struggling economy weighed down by debt, high inflation, and weakened institutions. At the same time, it credited the Ruto administration with stabilizing the economy and preventing a potential default.
UDA said the government has made strides in agriculture by rolling out subsidized fertilizer programs, improving coffee prices, and reviving sugar factories. It added that the administration has expanded healthcare coverage through the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The party further cited progress in education, affordable housing, and infrastructure development, including the recruitment of teachers, the construction of housing units, and the restart of stalled road projects.
On fuel prices, UDA defended the government against criticism over recent increases. It argued that the administration is pursuing long-term energy security measures rather than depending on subsidies.
The letter faulted the former president for not delivering sustainable measures to protect Kenya from global fuel shocks during his tenure. It said the current administration now seeks investments in local oil production, renewable energy, and electric mobility.
UDA also accused the Jubilee party leader of tapping into public frustrations, especially among young people, to target the government.
“Since leaving office, you have dedicated yourself to undermining the very government you handed over. You operate from behind the scenes, mobilizing political hostility, fueling public anger, and quietly hoping the country fails.”
The statement followed Uhuru’s renewed criticism of the government over rising living costs and fuel prices that have left Kenyans struggling.
During the Jubilee party delegates forum at the Kiambu Golf Club on Monday, Uhuru urged national leaders to stop divisive politics. He argued that Kenyans do not feel angry because of politics but because of the economic pressure they face.
