KANU spokesperson Tony Gachoka has officially launched his bid for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, pledging to fight corruption, dismantle cartels, and restore integrity in how the capital is run.
In an interview on the evening of Sunday, July 12, the veteran journalist said he made the decision after years of watching Nairobi’s governance challenges. He argued that the county needs accountable leadership focused on delivery and transparency, not politics for its own sake.
“After years of observing the challenges facing Nairobi, I have come to the conclusion that what the city needs is accountable leadership, not politics,” he said.
Before making his candidacy public, Gachoka said he held consultations with several political leaders, including KANU chairman Gideon Moi, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He said the discussions formed part of his effort to build broad political support.
“I have talked to Gachagua. As far as I am concerned, in the absence of Rigathi blocking me, I have the majority of the support of other coalition partners and principals. From what I have heard from Gachagua and his people, they think I am the right man for Nairobi,” he said.
Gachoka said he believes coalition politics will shape the outcome of the Nairobi gubernatorial race again, arguing that no single candidate can win the city without support from multiple voting blocs.
He pledged to tackle corruption at City Hall by ensuring transparent use of public funds and strengthening accountability across the county government. He said integrity must also start during political campaigns, and he promised Nairobi residents an administration that stays free from corruption and misuse of public resources.
Gachoka adds to a growing list of politicians who have publicly declared or signaled their intention to contest the Nairobi governorship in the 2027 general election. His move sets the stage for what is expected to become one of the country’s most competitive county races.
Among the prominent names already in the race are Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri. Former senior government adviser Moses Kuria also declared interest before shifting his focus to Gatundu South, while businesswoman Agnes Kagure said she would make another attempt at the seat after her unsuccessful 2022 bid.
Incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja is widely expected to seek a second term, though he has not yet formally launched his re-election campaign.
Gachoka has worked in Kenya’s media and public affairs for more than 25 years, building a reputation as a political analyst and governance commentator. He currently serves as the spokesperson of the Kenya African National Union (KANU), marking his latest step into elective politics with his bid for City Hall.
