Boost for Central Kenya as Ksh33bn Kenol–Sagana–Marua Highway Almost Done | BossNana International Radio

The Government Delivery Unit (GDU) confirmed on Wednesday, May 27, that construction of the Kenol-Sagana-Marua Highway has hit a 99.5 percent completion rate.

The GDU revealed that the project expands the busy route into an 84-kilometer, four-lane dual carriageway built at an estimated cost of Ksh33 billion. Construction crews broke the massive project into two phases: Lot 1 covers a 48-kilometer stretch running from Kenol to Sagana, while Lot 2 spans 36 kilometers from Sagana to Marua.

According to the State Department of Roads, the modernization project will thoroughly unlock the economic potential of the Central Kenya region.

“The 84km modernization project has officially unlocked the economic potential of Central Kenya by expanding the busy route into a 4-lane highway.”

The State Department noted that the project promises safer journeys, faster market access for local farmers, and a seamless transit link stretching from Nairobi all the way to the Horn of Africa.

Officials from the GDU explained that the modernized highway will significantly slash travel times to Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Nyeri, Nyandarua, and Laikipia. Additionally, the new infrastructure will ensure smooth vehicle flow during congested holiday seasons, accelerate the transit of fresh agricultural produce to major markets, bolster cross-country and regional commerce, and generate numerous jobs for local communities.

Engineers at the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) stated that they designed the upgraded road to withstand diverse weather conditions and deliver long-term durability.

Furthermore, the Government Delivery Unit disclosed that the highway integrates Kenya into the grand Cairo-Cape Town Trans-African Corridor, creating an expansive continental network. The Government of Kenya, the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the Africa Growing Together Fund jointly funded the multi-billion-shilling project.
