Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is supporting the family of a woman killed in a hit-and-run accident in Ruai, Nairobi County, covering funeral expenses and pledging to help pursue justice for the suspect driver.
Sonko shared about the incident on Wednesday, May 27, saying a speeding vehicle struck 39-year-old Miriam Wangare at Acacia Estate along Kangundo Road before fleeing the scene. The impact proved fatal, leaving her family devastated, including her young daughter, Baby Angel Nyambura, who lives with a physical disability.
In his statement, Sonko described the emotional toll the tragedy has taken on the child and the wider family.
“Another innocent soul, 7-year-old Baby Angel Nyambura, a PP2 pupil at Blessed Generation School in Ruai who is partly physically challenged, has painfully lost her 39-year-old mother, Miriam Wangare, following a tragic hit-and-run accident at Acacia Estate along Kangundo Road in Ruai after a speeding vehicle knocked her down and fled the scene. She died on the spot,” Sonko wrote.
Sonko said the victim’s husband, Patrick Mwangi, who works as a plumber doing casual jobs, sought his help after struggling to raise funeral expenses.
“Yesterday, Angel’s father, Patrick Mwangi, a plumber who survives on casual jobs, came to my office seeking help as he was unable to meet the funeral expenses needed to give his beloved wife a decent send-off,” he added.
Following the appeal, Sonko confirmed that his team covered all burial costs, ensuring the family can lay Wangare to rest in Ol Kalou on Thursday.
“As usual, we stepped in and cleared all the funeral bills, including the coffin, minibus, and hearse that will transport the body to Ol Kalou on Thursday for burial.”
Beyond financial support, Sonko pledged cooperation with the National Police Service to track down the driver responsible for the fatal hit-and-run in Ruai. He noted that investigators have already identified nearby buildings fitted with CCTV cameras that could help reconstruct the incident and locate the suspect vehicle.
“I also want to assure Baby Angel and her father that we shall work together with the National Police Service to seek justice for them by tracking down the driver of the speeding vehicle. After visiting the accident scene, we established that there are three buildings near the scene fitted with CCTV cameras, and the owners have been very cooperative,” Sonko said.
