The High Court has summoned a crucial witness to testify in the ongoing investigation into the mysterious disappearance of security expert Mwenda Mbijiwe, a case that has remained unresolved since 2021.
Justice Martin Moya issued the directive following an application by Evans Ondieki, the lawyer representing Mbijiwe’s family, during a recent court hearing.
In an affidavit presented to the court, Jane Gatwiri Mbijiwe, the missing man’s mother, provided a detailed account of the events leading to her son’s disappearance. She told the court that men in civilian clothing, whom she believes were police officers, allegedly seized Mwenda in the Roysambu area while he was traveling to Meru in 2021.
According to Jane’s testimony, her son was driving a vehicle belonging to his friend, Edward Maina Macharia, at the time of his abduction. Authorities later impounded the car before releasing it, but she revealed that investigators have never called Macharia to provide a statement or explain the circumstances surrounding the vehicle’s seizure.
Claims of Intimidation Following DCI Meeting
Jane also disclosed to the court that she has experienced intimidation at her Meru home. She connected the alleged harassment to a meeting she held with Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin, who she said had promised that authorities would fast-track the investigation into her son’s disappearance.
The grieving mother described Mwenda as a highly trained security consultant and former Kenya Air Force officer who maintained professional relationships with senior government officials. To support her claims, she presented photographs showing him alongside former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and high-ranking Kenya Defence Forces officers, underscoring his credentials and connections within security circles.
Family Tensions and Emotional Courtroom Scene
Beyond the search for her missing son, Jane revealed that tension has grown within the family. She claimed her relationship with her daughter-in-law has deteriorated significantly since Mwenda’s disappearance, adding another layer of pain to an already devastating situation.
The emotional toll of the case became evident on Wednesday when Jane broke down during her testimony. She became visibly overwhelmed at the witness stand shortly after cross-examination, weeping and leaning back in distress. The court briefly halted proceedings as her daughter, Mbijiwe’s sister, rushed to comfort her.
Mwenda Mbijiwe vanished in 2021 under circumstances that remain unclear. Authorities later discovered his car abandoned near Nyeri, deepening concerns about his fate and raising questions about what happened during his journey to Meru.
The case has attracted public attention, with family members taking extraordinary measures to keep it in the spotlight. Seven months after the disappearance, Mwenda’s brother, Nicholas Bundi, undertook a symbolic trek from Meru to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi, urging authorities to provide answers and accelerate the investigation.
Next Steps in the Case
The court has scheduled the matter for mention on February 18, 2026, when it will verify whether authorities have properly served the summons to the key witness.
