Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah has expressed concern over the declining momentum of Kenya’s Gen Z, calling on young people to channel their energy into voter registration.
Speaking in an interview with K24 TV on Tuesday, January 13, 2025, Wajackoyah, who unsuccessfully contested the 2022 general elections, noted that the Gen Zs had once shown significant influence during the 2024 Finance Bill protests, which temporarily paralyzed the country and forced President William Ruto to respond to their demands.
“For the first time, I will say something against Gen Z. They came up with proper momentum, but they have lost it. I am not seeing them going to register as voters. Their legitimacy can only be manifested through votes. I ask them to register because they are the only ones who can bring change,” Wajackoyah said.
Wajackoyah criticized young people for failing to transform their protest energy into political action through voter registration, emphasizing that real change comes at the ballot box.
He also revealed a key policy he intends to implement if elected president: linking voter registration to the issuance of IDs and driving licences.
“This is what I will do if I become the president in the first year; I will make voter registration compulsory,” he said.
“I will make sure that legislation is passed that if you reach the age of maturity, before you get your ID or driving licence, you must also apply to register as a voter. But if you get your ID or driving licence, they cannot be functional unless you register as a voter,” Wajackoyah added.
Looking ahead to the 2027 presidential elections, Wajackoyah stated that securing support from the diaspora and Gen Z voters would be critical to defeating President Ruto.
