Bungoma Woman Hugs Tree for 74 Hours to Protest Corruption | BossNana International Radio

A 23-year-old woman in Bungoma town has embarked on a 74-hour tree-hugging challenge to raise awareness about corruption in public offices.

The protest is taking place along the railway line opposite Posta Grounds in Bungoma, where Flora Onyango, a resident of Mbakalo Ward in Tongaren Constituency, has vowed to remain clinging to a tree for three consecutive days.

“I came here today to start my three-day protest against corruption. I have not trained for the challenge, but I am confident that I will break the record,” Onyango said.

She explained that the symbolic protest aims to draw public attention to rampant corruption in the country and to urge leaders to take decisive action.

“I challenge government agencies tasked with combating graft to intensify their efforts,” she added.

Onyango revealed that she traveled from Nairobi to Bungoma to carry out the challenge in her home county, believing it gives the protest more significance. She also confirmed that she will neither eat nor drink water throughout the 74 hours.

“My family is aware of my protest and have been informed about my whereabouts and intentions,” Onyango said.

The challenge began at 1:04 p.m. on Monday and is expected to conclude at the same time on Thursday, with a designated monitor recording the time.

Onyango joins a growing number of Kenyans attempting the tree-hugging challenge, which gained popularity after 22-year-old environmentalist Truphena Muthoni set a world record by hugging a tree for 72 hours straight.

The record was later surpassed by Murang’a-based pastor James Irungu, who hugged a tree for 79 hours, though he collapsed just an hour shy of reaching 80 hours due to exhaustion.
