A police constable will face a murder charge after shooting a student to death in a fight in Eldoret Town.
The constable was nabbed following the murder of 22-year-old Dalphia Mwangi, a student at Kitale Polytechnic, on October 22, 2025.
Mwangi died from his stomach injuries on Friday while undergoing treatment at the hospital, as confirmed by the police. He had been shot in his abdomen.
The development came as prosecutors brought the officer before the magistrate’s court in Kitale where an investigating officer with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority(IPOA) successfully sought that he be detained for another ten days.
The court issued an order placing the officer in remand at Kiminini police station for ten days while investigations continue.
Later that evening, Mwangi died while doctors treated him at Top Hill Hospital in Eldoret, which escalated the case to murder, according to police.
Police arrested the officer after conducting an identification parade at Kitale police station, where several witnesses identified him as the person who shot the student. The officer shot the victim at the Norec Shopping Centre near a pool table where Mwangi and his friends were playing in the early morning hours of October 22.
Witnesses claim the police officer shot him and fled on a motorbike.
Police responded to the incident and discovered patches of blood near a pool table shop. Officers recovered two spent 9mm cartridges and one bullet head from the area.
Witnesses told police that the officer had a scuffle with the student before shooting him at close range on the abdomen. They later added that he was an officer stationed at the local police station.
The victim was rushed to Kijana Wamalwa Referral Hospital in a critical state before he was referred to Eldoret, where he died.
