Police in Kisumu East Sub-County have arrested four suspected criminals and recovered a Jericho pistol that had been stolen from a police officer attached to Kakamega Governor Fernandez Barasa. The operation, conducted on the evening of October 25, followed a tip-off from alert members of the public in Manyatta “B” slums, Mbeme area.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, officers raided a targeted house where they apprehended four suspects identified as Timothy Odhiambo, David Beckham Odhiambo, Tony Blair Omondi, and Harun Ibrahim. Upon interrogation, the suspects led the officers to another hideout, where a Jericho pistol fitted with a magazine containing 14 rounds of ammunition was recovered.
The firearm had been stolen from Constable Benson Kodia Olayo, a General Service Unit (GSU) officer assigned as Governor Barasa’s bodyguard. The weapon was reportedly snatched from him during the burial ceremony of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST).
According to the police report, the incident occurred as the state event ended and Raila Odinga’s body was being moved to the Odinga family home for interment. Constable Olayo, who was in the company of four colleagues, said rowdy youth surrounded Governor Barasa’s official vehicle and snatched the pistol loaded with 15 rounds from its holster. He sustained bruises while attempting to recover the weapon amid the commotion.
The four suspects are now in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities commended the public’s vigilance and reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying crackdowns against armed criminals in Kisumu and surrounding regions.
