ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has made it clear; he will walk away from the party if it backs President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.
While speaking at a public event in Sabaoti, Trans Nzoia County on Sunday, Sifuna emphasized that personal principles should come before blind party loyalty, especially when it comes to endorsing a presidential candidate.
“I assure ODM supporters that my stance remains,” he said.
Referencing ODM leader Raila Odinga, Sifuna reminded critics that the party embraces democratic ideals and allows members to speak their minds. He pushed back against those who claim his role as secretary-general means he must always echo the party’s voice.
“Raila himself has said that this is a democratic party and any member is free to speak their mind,” Sifuna noted. “et some thugs are saying I cannot hold views independent of the party just because I am the secretary-general, that I represent the party at all times.”
Sifuna made his position even clearer on Sunday; he may be the ODM Secretary-General, but he draws the line at endorsing President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid.
The Nairobi Senator said he’s ready to perform his duties, even when it means reading out difficult or unpopular party statements. But if ODM ever decides to back Ruto, he won’t be the one delivering that message.
“I’m willing to read whatever statement ODM releases, even if it insults me,” he said. “But the day the party decides to support Ruto in 2027, that one, I won’t read.”
Taking a jab at those who’ve compared him to Nyando MP Jared Okello, Sifuna said if language skills were the only qualification, then Okello should be prepared to step in.
“Some have said Jared Okello is better than I am at it because he speaks good English. Okello, be ready if you want to take up my role,” Sifuna added. “If they endorse Ruto, I won’t be a part of that.”
