Raila Odinga Mausoleum Takes Shape as Construction Hits 50% (PHOTOS) | BossNana International Radio

Construction of the Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, has reached 50 percent completion just one month after groundbreaking, with the project on track to wrap up by the end of September 2026.

Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru confirmed the milestone on Thursday during a site inspection tour to evaluate construction progress and verify compliance with project timelines.

“We were here in July for the groundbreaking, and exactly one month later, significant progress has been realized,” PS Mariru said in a statement. “This project, being supervised by the Ministry of Defence, is currently at 50% completion and is expected to be completed by the end of September 2026. This we shall achieve.”

Rising adjacent to the final resting place of Kenya’s first vice-president, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the memorial honors the late statesman’s public life. Its design intentionally integrates key political motifs, including a distinctive pentagonal shape reflecting Raila Odinga’s influence and the historic “Pentagon” leadership era of the Orange Democratic Movement.

The broader master plan for the historical site, spearheaded by the National Museums of Kenya (NMK), aims to transform the Kang’o ka Jaramogi compound into a full-scale national heritage landmark. Features will include digital archives, interactive mini-exhibitions documenting Kenya’s democratic struggles, landscaped walkways connecting mausoleums, and research spaces and cultural learning facilities.

“The progress at the site reflects a carefully coordinated construction effort aimed at delivering a dignified and enduring landmark that will preserve Raila Amolo Odinga’s legacy for generations to come, while providing a place to reflect on his immense contribution to Kenya’s history and public life,” Mariru added.

To allow heavy construction and structural alterations to proceed safely, the National Museums of Kenya temporarily closed the adjacent Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum to visitors starting July 20. The site will remain closed to the public and tourists through October 30, 2026.
