Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on Kenyan women in the diaspora to to enter politics confidently ahead of the 2027 General Election. He invited them to stop waiting to be appointed and instead run for elective positions in a bid to help reform Kenya’s stricken political landscape.
Speaking on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at a diaspora convention in Richardson, Dallas, Texas, Gachagua said the country is suffering from a crisis of leadership triggered by economic stagnation, corruption, and police brutality. He observed that Kenya requires fresh voices, especially women, to steer a new course.
“For the women, as much as we nominate you, you must also fight for these seats,” Gachagua said.
“Most of these seats are vacant. Most of these MPs, wananchi wamemalizana na wao. So we want to encourage you people to stand.”
Gachagua challenged Texas-based women to take initiative, noting that many men in the diaspora have already expressed interest in running for office.
“Where are the women from Texas? I’ve met several men here who are already eyeing seats back home in Kenya.”
Gachagua praised the Kenyan diaspora for their patriotism and vital contribution to sustaining the economy with remittances. Their voices still remain crucial in shaping the nation’s future, he said.
“Tonight at Richardson, in Dallas, I had a candid discussion with Kenyans living in Texas. I thanked them for their continued voice on matters in Kenya… Their pain and ours on the state of our nation remain intertwined,” he said.
He also underscored the need to involve the diaspora in dialogue on governance, justice, and economic transformation. Gachagua promised to involve them to “reboot the economic, political, and moral direction of our country for the good of future generations.”
Touching on opposition struggles, he cited the August 2 teargassing of his allies in Gilgil, claiming, “There is a deliberate attempt to frustrate and threaten our political engagements,” he said. “But we are not afraid.”
