Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has thrown down the gauntlet to Gideon Moi ahead of the upcoming Baringo County by-elections.
Speaking during a public address in Uasin Gishu, Duale dismissed Moi’s political maneuvers as empty theatrics and dared him to prove his popularity at the ballot. He accused Moi of riding on the back of his late father, former President Daniel arap Moi, without carving a serious political niche for himself.
“Tell Gideon Moi to stop the nonsense,” Duale said bluntly in Swahili. “The only meaningful thing he has is his father’s name. His CV doesn’t say much, just that he’s Mzee Moi’s son, a great old man. He even opposed Ruto when he was deputy. People of Baringo, if you’re here, go and tell that young man he’s lost his way.”
Duale reminded residents that Moi was against President William Ruto when he was deputy president and urged voters to reject politicians who failed to support the region’s current leadership.
He pointed to the upcoming Baringo by-election – triggered by Senator William Cheptumo’s death – as the perfect place for a political face-off.
“Tell him to meet us in the Senate race,” Duale said. “There’s a by-election in Baringo for the late Cheptumo’s seat -let’s measure strength there. We’re already prepared. Sometimes, real men have to face each other head-on.”
The upcoming by-election in Baringo County is due to the February 16, 2025, passing of Senator William Kipkorir Cheptumo. As much as the senatorial seat has been vacant for months, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is yet to set an official polling date.
There is growing pressure on the IEBC to accelerate, as the Constitution requires that by-elections be held within 90 days of a vacancy. Several recent by-elections have already exceeded that timeframe, amid mounting public concern over delays in filling important legislative seats.
