Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has applauded the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN), describing it as a timely and strategic government investment that is already delivering results. She credited the tournament with creating job opportunities for young Kenyans and promoting national cohesion.
Speaking during a post-match CHAN event in Nairobi on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Passaris commended the government for committing significant resources to co-host the continental event alongside Tanzania and Uganda.
“The government has poured significant resources into hosting CHAN, and that’s a commendable initiative,” she said. “This tournament is opening up job opportunities for our youth, especially in the hospitality sector. Hotels are hiring, and that means more young people are getting employed.”
With Kenya grappling with high youth unemployment, Passaris emphasized that hosting international sports events like CHAN provides both short-term economic gains and long-term global exposure. She noted that the championship has already triggered activity in sectors such as tourism, food and beverage, transport, and event management.
“As CHAN unfolds, we’re seeing hospitality businesses in Nairobi and nearby towns experiencing a surge in visitors,” she said. “Hotels are hiring extra hands to handle the rising demand, which means more young people are getting a shot at earning a living.”
Beyond the economic benefits, Passaris highlighted the social value of the tournament, stating that CHAN has become a powerful unifier, rallying Kenyans behind the national team and strengthening the country’s sense of pride.
“This championship has also contributed to national cohesion. When Austine Odhiambo scored the goal, no one said he came from Nyanza. Our footballers are also exposing their talent to the outside world,” she added.
She hailed Odhiambo’s performance as a reflection of a united Kenya, one that celebrates talent over tribe. Passaris added that CHAN offers a platform for local players to attract international scouts and potentially secure professional contracts abroad.
She urged young Kenyans to seize the many opportunities tied to the tournament, including jobs in hospitality, logistics, and media.
