Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala is staring at criminal charges after allegedly landing a helicopter without clearance at Mumias Sports Complex during the national secondary school games finals.
The dramatic landing occurred during halftime of a high-stakes match between Musingu High School and St. Joseph’s Kitale, stunning thousands of students, teachers, education officials, and spectators as the chopper descended onto the pitch mid-event.
Western Region Police Commander Issa Muhamoud stated that Malala and the pilot of the helicopter will be charged. They will prosecute them on different charges, including endangering public safety, creating a public nuisance, trespassing, and violating aviation regulations.
“It was not an emergency landing and it was not an accident,” Muhamoud stated.
“This was a clear violation of civil aviation rules, the Basic Education Act, the Ministry of Education guidelines on children’s safety, and the Penal Code.”
He strongly condemned the move, calling it “irresponsible, reckless, and a national embarrassment,” and suggested Malala’s actions were politically motivated.
“He was probably seeking a political photo opportunity but ended up putting the safety and dignity of Kenyans at risk,” Muhamoud remarked.
Police say the unapproved landing disrupted the event, triggered panic, and could have caused a tragic stampede among the school children in attendance.
“The helicopter could have crashed, learners could have trampled on each other, and lives could have been lost,” the regional police chief warned.
In response, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the Ministry of Education, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have opened a joint investigation.
“Full criminal investigations are underway,” confirmed Regional Police Commander Issa Muhamoud. He described the landing as a blatant misuse of public space and a serious violation of child safety protocols.
Muhamoud reiterated that the safety of Kenyan children is not negotiable.
“We will not allow disorder, arrogance, or impunity to endanger the lives of our future generation,” he asserted. “The law will take its full course.”
