Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja revealed that discussions are under way about joining the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and leaving the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Sakaja said he is consulting with the relevant parties to guide his choice. He noted that momentum behind the move has grown due to his close relationship with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who had previously encouraged him to make the switch.
“There has been that call. Some officials and party members have said that they want me to move to their party,” he said during an interview with Radio Citizen on Wednesday.
He added that the timing follows the death of Odinga and the closeness they shared.
“In October, we will be marking one year since Raila left us, and we were very close; he was like my father, and he also wanted that (to join). We were in touch a lot before his death.”
While Sakaja has not finalized a timeline or made an official declaration, he stressed that his decision will ultimately reflect the wishes of Nairobi residents.
“There is no official date for when we will leave UDA, but the call is there. It is something I am observing; we must also look at what people are saying. If that’s what they want, then I am their employee,” he said.
Sakaja’s comments follow statements from Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, who claimed that UDA is rapidly losing its political foothold in the capital.
“UDA is done. I hear Sakaja wants to move to ODM led by Oburu. We wish you the best. And even the ODM has nothing. It is a shell,” Gachagua said.
He made the comments while receiving a faction of political leaders and officials who have defected from UDA, Jubilee, and other parties, including Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan.
