A traffic police officer died at Nairobi West Hospital after a hit-and-run driver struck her at a road junction in Makadara, Nairobi.
Corporal Joyce Muthoni Mwicigi (Service Number 69164) succumbed to severe injuries on August 22, 2026, roughly 26 hours after the incident.
According to reports from Makongeni Police Station, Corporal Mwicigi was directing traffic at the intersection of Lungalunga Road and Mogadishu Road around 12:30 p.m. when the crash occurred. An Isuzu lorry (registration number KZQ 282), heading from the House of Manji toward Donholm, failed to comply when the uniformed officer signaled the driver to stop to allow other vehicles onto Mogadishu Road.
The driver defied the directive, hit and knocked down Corporal Mwicigi, and fled the scene. During the escape, the speeding vehicle rammed into three other cars.
Emergency responders rushed Corporal Mwicigi to Nairobi West Hospital with a fractured pelvis, facial lacerations, and severe body trauma. Medical staff treated her for over a day before declaring her dead at 2:10 p.m. the following afternoon.
Senior police officials inspected the site, and officers towed the three damaged vehicles to the station for official inspection. Authorities registered the case and launched a manhunt to trace and arrest the fleeing driver.
