Following a tightly guarded two-day strategy retreat, the Linda Mwananchi movement has decided to take legal action to force the registration of its political party.
“Everyone knows we have painfully marketed Linda Mwananchi for several months. It is our brand. We should be allowed to register it,” Brian Weke, a member of the movement, said.
Weke confirmed that the coalition will launch its legal challenge immediately. “Early this week, we are moving to court. That is the decision,” he said as quoted by mainstream media on Monday, August 24.
His statements echo the stance of Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, who signaled on Friday that the team would file a lawsuit. Osotsi explained that they are pursuing legal action because the Registrar of Political Parties declined to register LINDA, claiming another entity already holds the name – an assertion Osotsi rejects as false.
Osotsi accused the registrar of acting “mischievously” despite the group reserving the name in advance.
“We want to expose the mischief in that office. We have written to him to give us the particulars of the party he claims is registered as Linda, but he has refused,” Osotsi stated.
The movement is reportedly preparing backup strategies should the judicial process fail.
“Honestly, some people think Sifuna doesn’t have a party? Let our supporters relax; a rose by any other name still sells,” Sifuna said during the burial of Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale’s wife on Friday.
Linda Mwananchi Retreat Outcome
Organizers initially planned the two-day retreat for Stoni Athi Hotel in Machakos before shifting the venue to Limuru, where proceedings wrapped up on Sunday evening. During the sessions, leaders received a detailed progress report from a technical team of experts analyzing key policy sectors.
This technical team highlighted major economic challenges facing Kenyans, including heavy taxation, the rising cost of living, and alleged police excesses, while offering concrete policy solutions.
“The group not only identified them, but it also came up with measures to resolve them. Going forward, Kenyans are going to see different messaging. Ruto has been telling us we don’t have an agenda. He will be shocked,” an MP linked to the group said.
Retreat sessions evaluated the movement’s public performance, mapped out upcoming rallies, and established security protocols following recent disruptions at public events. Osotsi noted that the gathering provided valuable time for leaders to reflect and strategize for future political engagements.
Linda Mwananchi has built significant momentum across the country, hosting events in at least 16 counties. The nationwide tour launched in Busia on February 8 and has since traversed Kajiado, Kakamega, Narok, Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Vihiga, Kisumu, Machakos, Kiambu, Kisii, Taita Taveta, Trans Nzoia, and Bungoma.
Its most recent rally in Homa Bay on August 16 saw Sifuna and his allies encounter chaotic scene disruptions. Looking ahead, the group plans to hold a major rally in Meru next weekend, preceded by grassroots mobilization meetings across Nairobi constituencies to solidify its urban backing.
