Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi claims former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has repeatedly lobbied him to join the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), but he firmly rejects abandoning the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Clarifying that he never initiates contact, Wamumbi stated during a Thursday television interview that their most recent interaction occurred just the previous evening at Gachagua’s request.
“The last time I spoke with Rigathi Gachagua was last night, and he is the one who looked for me,” Wamumbi said.
The lawmaker confirmed that they regularly communicate via text messages, though he underscored that the former deputy president always reaches out first.
“Ni ukweli mimi huongea na Rigathi Gachagua kupitia ujumbe, lakini mimi si ninayemtafuta; yeye ndiye anayenitafuta,” he said.
Wamumbi, a steadfast ally of President William Ruto’s administration, pledged his continued loyalty to UDA and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the president’s 2027 re-election bid. The MP currently represents the very constituency Gachagua served before stepping into the deputy presidency following the 2022 general election.
“Mimi ni mwanachama wa chama tawala cha UDA na nitabaki chama cha UDA. Mimi ni Mbunge wa Mathira na mimi ndio mbunge wa Gachagua, na ni kweli sisi huongea. Mara ya mwisho kuongea ilikuwa jana usiku. Yeye ndiye mwenye kunitafuta,” he said.
Outrightly dismissing the idea of joining DCP, Wamumbi criticized the fledgling party for lacking a coherent national agenda or unifying platform.
“Chama cha DCP mimi siendi kwa sababu sioni wakiwa na plan, sioni wakiwa na agenda, vision ya kujenga nchi, sioni wakiwa na vision ya kuunganisha Wakenya,” he said.
Taking the political spat further, Wamumbi alleged that financial requests have surfaced in their private exchanges, claiming he advised the former deputy president to stop soliciting funds from him.
“Awache kuhadaa Wakenya kuwaambia mimi ndiyo nakutafuta, sio mimi namtafuta, ni yeye… na ninamwambia mimi sina hela, awache kuniitisha,” Wamumbi said.
These latest developments follow Wamumbi’s recent admission that the two regularly chat on WhatsApp. He publicly accused Gachagua of leaking selective excerpts of their private conversations, asserting that he holds the complete message logs, which reveal far more context than what has reached the public eye.
