Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi announced that Kenya Power has withdrawn a proposed retail electricity tariff review application, which could have raised electricity costs from July 1 through 2029.
Kenya Power submitted the application to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority on March 31 to request a tariff review.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, CS Wandayi said Kenya Power withdrew the application to protect livelihoods and reduce the pressure on consumers amid concerns about rising electricity prices.
“Following the withdrawal of the application, the current retail electricity tariffs shall remain in force and unchanged, unless otherwise lawfully reviewed in accordance with the Energy Act and applicable regulatory procedures,” the CS said.
Wandayi added that the withdrawal will not disrupt the delivery of electricity services. Consumers and businesses will continue receiving power without interruption under the current tariff structure.
The ministry said the decision supports its commitment to a sustainable energy sector, economic growth, and protection for households, businesses, and industries from cost escalation.
