President William Ruto has announced that the government will purchase a brand new ferry for the Likoni channel, committing Ksh3 billion to ease one of the Coast region’s most persistent transport headaches.
Speaking on Thursday during his five-day development tour of the Coast, Ruto told a cheering crowd that the new vessel will be ready and operational by December 2026, bringing long-awaited relief to commuters traveling between Mombasa and Kwale counties.
The ferry announcement came alongside a separate Ksh500 million commitment to revive the Mtongwe crossing, a vital link between Mombasa Mainland and the South Coast that has long needed attention.
“We have committed Ksh3 billion, and by December, we will have a new ferry to reduce the congestion here at this ferry. In Mtongwe, we are investing another Ksh500 million to ensure that mobility is enhanced in this region,” Ruto told the crowd.
A 90-Day Ultimatum on Land
Beyond the transport commitments, Ruto used the tour to take direct aim at one of the Coast region’s most deeply rooted grievances: land. He presided over the distribution of title deeds to local residents and issued a firm 90-day ultimatum to the Ministry of Lands to resolve the tangled issues surrounding absentee landlords, missing ownership documents, and residents who have lived for generations on land they do not legally own.
“I am instructing the Ministry of Lands to subdivide the lands with absentee landlords so that everybody can have their own land. After 90 days, I will be here to release the title deeds for 200,000 households,” the President said.
Under the directive, residents currently occupying those properties will transition from squatter status to legally recognized landowners, securing permanent ownership rights over the land they already call home.
