FIFA Steps In as FKF Power Struggle Intensifies Over Hussein Mohammed Suspension | BossNana International Radio

The world’s football governing body, FIFA, has formally launched an investigation into the latest leadership crisis rocking the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). FIFA is now demanding a detailed explanation regarding the suspension of FKF President Hussein Mohammed, who was ordered to step aside following a Sh42 million insurance scandal involving the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

In a letter dispatched on Sunday, April 26, FIFA confirmed it is working alongside the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to determine if the FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) followed due process. The global body seeks to establish whether the move complied with federation statutes or if it constituted an unconstitutional power play.

“We wish to inform you that FIFA, in coordination with the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), is currently assessing this matter with a view to gaining a clear and accurate understanding of the circumstances surrounding the adoption of the Resolution, as well as its compliance with the FKF Statutes,” the letter states.

FIFA has directed the federation to submit critical documentation by May 1, including records of how the emergency meeting was convened and proof of a valid quorum. Specifically, investigators want to see evidence that the affected officials received a fair opportunity to defend themselves before the NEC took action, as required under articles 38, 40, and 41 of the FKF constitution.

The inquiry follows a Friday resolution where nine out of 14 NEC members voted to suspend Mohammed, alongside NEC member Abdullahi Yusuf Ibrahim and Acting General Secretary Dennis Gicheru. While the committee appointed deputy president and former Inter Milan star McDonald Mariga as acting president, Mohammed has dismissed the suspension as invalid and unconstitutional.

“Further, we kindly request that you provide a detailed written justification underlying the adoption of the resolution, together with copies of all documents, records, correspondences, or other material that were relied upon by the NEC in reaching its decision,” states Elkhan Mammadov, FIFA’s Chief Member Association Officer.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) was plunged into a leadership crisis on Friday after an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting resolved to suspend President Hussein Mohammed. The committee also directed Acting CEO Dennis Gicheru and NEC member Abdullahi Yusuf to step aside, citing a dispute over a Sh42 million insurance policy for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.

However, Mohammed has forcefully rejected the suspension, labeling the move a “malicious” attempt to destabilize the federation. He maintains that no funds were lost and clarified that the Confederation of African Football (CAF), rather than the FKF, handled the procurement of the insurance under the host agreement.

“The procurement of the insurance for CHAN 2025 was conducted within the framework of the CAF host agreement… We state categorically that the required insurance cover was procured by CAF, not myself, and was duly secured and maintained throughout the tournament.”

Mohammed challenged his accusers to provide any evidence of financial transfers from the FKF to an insurance firm, insisting that the allegations are entirely baseless.

“FKF did not transfer or pay money to any insurance company for the CHAN competition, and I can challenge anyone to provide evidence that FKF paid the money. There was no loss of money in relation to the insurance cover.”

The embattled president further argued that the meeting led by his deputy, McDonald Mariga, lacked any legal standing. He pointed to Article 38 of the FKF Constitution, which mandates that the president must convene such sittings unless specific conditions for a member-led meeting are met—conditions he claims were ignored.

“The purported meeting held on the 24th of April was not confirmed as having happened, because I have not received any formal communication about the same. In accordance with the FKF constitution 2017, the meeting was irregular, unlawful, and unconstitutional.”

Mohammed concluded that because he did not convene the session and the 21-day notice period for a member-led meeting was not observed, any resulting resolutions remain null and void.

“Consequently, the so-called decision to suspend or remove any FKF member arising from that sitting is automatically null and void… I did not convene any NEC meeting yesterday.”
