Dr. Joyce Kithure, the Second Lady and spouse of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, is calling on education stakeholders to ensure every child has access to quality learning as a foundation for a productive life. Speaking in Suba North, Homa Bay County, Dr. Kithure urged a collaborative effort between parents, teachers, and the government to nurture a generation of capable and responsible citizens.
The Second Lady, a senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi, championed education as a transformative tool during a fundraiser at Obalwanda Comprehensive School on Tuesday. The event aimed to raise funds for the construction of modern classrooms and a state-of-the-art science laboratory.
Empowering the Next Generation
During her address, Dr. Kithure reached out to parents and guardians, urging them to stay active in their children’s academic journeys. She noted that strong partnerships between home and school are essential for instilling the values of discipline and a genuine love for learning.
“Let us ensure that no child is left behind due to neglect, discouragement, or lack of support,” she urged.
Dr. Kithure also spoke directly to the students, describing education as the “greatest equalizer.” She challenged them to remain focused and maintain high levels of integrity as they pursue their dreams.
“I encourage you to remain focused on your studies. Education is your greatest equalizer. Be disciplined, curious, and determined. Respect your teachers, use your time wisely, and believe in your ability to succeed. Hard work and integrity will always open doors for you,” Dr. Kithure said.
SaVE Communities: Bridging Science and Society
Dr. Kithure’s advocacy extends beyond the classroom through her Science Adding Value to the Environment and the Communities (SaVE) project. This initiative seeks to move scientific research out of laboratories and into the heart of Kenyan communities to solve real-world problems.
The SaVE Communities project currently impacts several key areas:
- Education Support: Providing schools with water tanks to facilitate rainwater harvesting.
- Food Security: Delivering food relief to vulnerable populations.
- Climate Action: Partnering with farmers to adopt climate-smart agriculture and leading regional tree-planting campaigns for environmental sustainability.
“SaVE Communities is already in the process of supporting vulnerable communities through food relief by providing water tanks to schools to enable rainwater harvesting, and we are also working with farmers to promote climate-smart agriculture by advising on suitable crops and smart farming practices in response to the harsh climate challenges we are facing.
We have also continued to plant trees across various regions as part of our commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability,” Dr. Kithure stated.
Investing in the Future of STEM
The planned science laboratory at Obalwanda Comprehensive School fits perfectly within Dr. Kithure’s vision for promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). She believes that hands-on learning environments are critical for preparing students to navigate a competitive, tech-driven global economy.
“When we invest in classrooms, laboratories, and safe learning spaces, we invest in the future of our children and the future of our nation,” she remarked. She added that such infrastructure will “nurture curiosity, innovation, and problem-solving skills among learners.”
By integrating infrastructure development with practical initiatives like climate-smart farming and water conservation, Dr. Kithure aims to cultivate a generation that views science not as abstract theory but as a practical tool for transforming livelihoods.
