Former ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has rubbished President William Ruto’s vision to transform Kenya into a first-world nation, arguing that the country cannot achieve such ambitions while millions of citizens struggle with basic needs.
Speaking at a funeral in Butere, Kakamega County, on Saturday, January 31, Owalo said the current administration has left many Kenyans drained and unable to embrace lofty promises of prosperity.
“We can’t take Kenyans to Singapore if their pockets are empty. No one can think about Singapore if they can’t afford food. Let us say no to Singapore,” Owalo stated.
Owalo served as ICT CS from October 2022 to July 2024 and criticized the first-family’s rhetoric as politically motivated. He warned citizens against being swayed by promises that, he argued, do not address their immediate struggles.
The former minister, who is eyeing the 2027 presidency, also vowed to launch a stronger crackdown on corruption. He claimed that a small elite controls nearly 90 percent of Kenya’s wealth, leaving millions of citizens in hardship while a few individuals accumulate vast fortunes.
“Approximately 90 per cent of Kenya’s wealth is in the hands of just 125 individuals. If elected as President, I will reveal their identities so that we know who has been stealing public funds,” Owalo said.
He added that anyone found guilty of corruption would serve jail terms at Kamiti Maximum Prison instead of using stolen resources to advance political ambitions. Owalo also pledged to reopen all corruption cases filed under the current constitution to ensure accountability.
Owalo’s remarks highlight growing public debate over Kenya’s feasibility of the president’s first-world agenda, as political actors position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
