Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has told nominated MP Sabina Chege that the Orange Democratic Movement must target the deputy president position in 2027 and aim for the presidency in 2032.
Kaluma shared the statement on his social media accounts on Sunday, February 15, 2025, responding to Chege, who had cautioned ODM over what she described as the party’s sudden pursuit of the DP slot.
Chege urged the party to proceed carefully, noting that President William Ruto would likely retain Kithure Kindiki as his deputy beyond 2027, with the possibility that Kindiki could run for president in 2032. She said, “ODM comes slowly. Kindiki is ours; he will still be the DP past 2027, and in 2032, he will even vie for the presidency.”
Kaluma dismissed Chege’s view, arguing that the Mt. Kenya region is not supporting President Ruto as strongly as Nyanza, despite controlling a majority of positions in his government.
He added that ODM should be given the running mate slot in 2027 and field a presidential candidate in 2032.
“We must get the DP seat in 2027 and the presidency in 2032. You can’t shout about retaining the DP seat, yet your people are not supporting President Ruto despite him appointing your people to all critical positions in public service and granting you the lion’s share of development,” Kaluma stated.
His comments follow a declaration by ODM party leader Oburu Odinga, who said that in any future coalition with UDA, the party would insist on securing the deputy president slot.
Kithure Kindiki also weighed in on the debate, urging Mt. Kenya residents not to be swayed by the political noise. He described himself as a seasoned strategist who chooses his moments carefully.
“Msibabaishwe na ile mambo kidogo kidogo ambayo mnaskia hapa na pale. Hii mambo ingine yote ya siasa, sisi ndio mafundi wa siasa, my friend. Na hatuongeangi sana. We know we talk at the right time,” he said.
