The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched a high-priority investigation into the death of a man during a political rally in Kitengela led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna on Sunday.
The probe comes amid public outrage over the conduct of security forces at the “Linda Mwananchi” rally, which drew opposition leaders including MPs Babu Owino and Caleb Amisi, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi.
In a statement on Monday, IPOA Vice Chairperson Ann Mwangi confirmed that the authority has deployed a rapid response team to Kajiado County.
“The Authority noted with great concern the loss of life and injuries during the Kitengela political rally, allegedly occurring as members of the National Police Service endeavored to maintain law and order,” the statement read.
Investigation to Assess Use of Force
The IPOA team will examine the circumstances surrounding the fatality, which reportedly occurred as police moved to disperse crowds. Investigators will determine whether the National Police Service’s use of force was justified, proportionate, and in line with constitutional standards.
The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Vincent Ayomo.
Senator Sifuna condemned the incident, alleging that both police and “hired goons” used excessive force against peaceful attendees. He described the rally as lawful and the disruption as a deliberate attempt to suppress democratic freedoms.
“We will pursue justice for his family and ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” Sifuna said, extending condolences to Ayomo’s family.
Police Response and Public Concerns
Police maintained that officers were deployed to preserve law and order, but the scene reportedly escalated into clashes involving teargas. IPOA expressed deep concern about the loss of life and the injuries sustained by rally attendees.
The independent watchdog confirmed it will make its findings public and provide recommendations for prosecution or disciplinary action if it finds any officer culpable. IPOA highlighted that its intervention aligns with its constitutional mandate to hold the police accountable and ensure lawful conduct.
The authority also extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The incident has renewed concerns about police behavior during political gatherings and the safety of civilians attending such events. IPOA reassured the public of its commitment to transparency and accountability.
“The Authority remains committed to its mandate of holding the National Police Service accountable and ensuring police operations are conducted transparently, professionally, and in full compliance with the law,” the statement concluded.
