Footballer Silas Abungana Dies After Violent Family Land Dispute | BossNana International Radio

The Kenyan football fraternity and Kakamega Homeboyz Football Club are mourning the tragic death of defender Silas Abungana, whose life was cut short in a shocking incident linked to a family land dispute.

Abungana, 25, died after his younger brother allegedly attacked him during a heated argument over family land, turning a domestic dispute into a fatal confrontation. The defender had joined Kakamega Homeboyz from Shabana FC earlier this season and was beginning to settle into life at the club.

A source within the club confirmed the incident, saying the argument escalated when the younger brother struck Abungana on the head with a metal bar. He was rushed to Kakamega County General Hospital, where doctors fought to save his life, but he succumbed to his injuries just minutes before midnight on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

“It’s sad that we had to lose such a young player. He was already blending in well with the rest of the squad after joining from Shabana earlier in the season,” the source said.

“He was reportedly attacked and killed by his own sibling after a dispute over a parcel of land belonging to the family turned nasty.”

Widow’s heartbreaking tribute

Abungana’s widow, Mary Wandera, shared a deeply emotional tribute that revealed the pain and shock gripping their young family.

“Why take an innocent life?” she wrote. “I had to be the first to tell our child the truth about their father’s death. How could anyone kill their own blood? Silas, don’t sleep. Silas, don’t go to rest. I can’t believe I am now a widow at such a young age.”

In another post, Mary expressed disbelief at losing her husband so suddenly.

“The man I loved with all my heart. God, it was far too early. God, why punish me this way? Silas, it is so early, darling, so early for my husband to leave.”

She later shared a photo of herself and Silas taken at the hospital, writing on her Facebook page Dem wa Arsenal: “I didn’t know this would be the last photo I would ever take with you. I never imagined it would be our final moment together.”

Club confirms death, asks for privacy

Kakamega Homeboyz confirmed Abungana’s death in a statement posted on their official Facebook page.

“Kakamega Homeboyz Football Club is deeply devastated by the untimely demise of Silas Abungana. The club can confirm that Silas passed away a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday, February 4, while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, after succumbing to head injuries sustained during an attack on Tuesday, February 3, at night.

“During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss. Rest in Peace, Silas. The club will issue further communication in due course.”

A painful reminder of past struggles

The tragedy has reopened wounds from Abungana’s personal struggles, which became public in 2025 when he shared a troubling social media post about his mental health and financial challenges.

“I have been going through a lot, I’ve fought like a man, but unfortunately, depression took the biggest percentage. My parents and sisters, all my accounts, please look after my child. I have nothing left one way or the other. God forgive me,” he wrote at the time.

Abungana had shown clear promise as a footballer. After featuring for Shabana FC, he earned a move to Kakamega Homeboyz, where coaches and teammates quickly noted his discipline, defensive awareness, and work ethic.

Those who played alongside him describe a committed professional who was eager to grow and make his mark in the Kenyan Premier League. His sudden death has left teammates, fans, and the wider football community grappling with a loss that feels both senseless and deeply personal.

As investigations continue, Silas Abungana is remembered not just as a footballer, but as a husband, a father, and a young man whose life and career ended far too soon.
