A plea agreement has been reached with one of the accused in the murder case of former Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, with the individual agreeing to become a state witness and testify against the remaining suspects.
The High Court sitting in Kibera was informed that Allan Omondi Ogola, who was Ong’ondo’s bodyguard at the time of his death, has entered into a plea agreement with the prosecution and will now testify as a prosecution witness. Ogola will be the first to take the stand when the trial opens on February 9 at 8:00 a.m. Five witnesses are expected to testify on the first day of proceedings.
Trial Judge Diana Kavedza instructed defence lawyer Chacha Mwita and his client to properly organise photographic evidence, including images reportedly showing bullet holes on vehicles, noting that doing so would help expedite the trial. She also urged Mwita to review all evidence thoroughly with his witness before the hearing to ensure proceedings run smoothly.
Charles Ong’ondo Were was shot and killed by unknown assailants on April 30, 2025, at the City Mortuary roundabout along Ngong’ Road. He was attacked by two gunmen riding a motorbike, with one reportedly dismounting and firing at close range, fatally wounding the MP.
The case has seen numerous twists since the killing. Twelve suspects were initially arrested, but five were released after detectives failed to link them to the crime. Two others – Were’s driver, Walter Awino Owino, and associate Dennis Sewe Manyasi – have since flipped to become state witnesses, agreeing to cooperate with authorities in the ongoing trial.
The developments set the stage for a high-profile courtroom showdown as investigators and prosecutors aim to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting of the former lawmaker.
