Five public primary school teachers from Kiharu Constituency have been whisked away to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), as a reward for their exceptional performance in national examinations.
The initiative is part of a motivation programme launched by MP Ndindi Nyoro in 2022 to recognize day school teachers and foster healthy competition among schools.
The group includes headteachers of the best-performing schools and teachers whose subjects recorded the most improvement in last year’s national exams. Authorities said teachers who excel in this year’s exams will earn a trip next year.
Last year, 11 teachers visited Dubai, while one chose Malaysia, having previously travelled to Dubai on a similar reward trip.
“Any teacher who has been to the destination is allowed to choose another destination of their choice,” said Anthony Warui, an aide to MP Nyoro. He added that the MP and the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) jointly fund the five-day trips.
Warui explained that the programme recognizes the hard work and sacrifices teachers make to produce successful learners, which often goes unnoticed.
Beatrice Wachira, headteacher of Technology Primary School in Murang’a Town, expressed her joy.
“I feel so happy. I urge teachers to continue working hard because their commitment and self-drive will take them far and will not go unnoticed,” she said.
Esther Macharia from Githagara Primary School highlighted her school’s consistent achievements, leading Kahuro Subcounty for three consecutive years. She noted that authorities have renovated and tiled all classrooms and installed pavement blocks in the school compound. The NGCDF is also establishing a learning resource centre with a laboratory to support teaching and learning.
Francis Waithaka, headteacher of Mbari ya Hiti Primary School, said he was transferred from Ngaru Primary School, which emerged as the best-improved school in the Central Region in 2022, earning recognition from Longhorn Publishers. He expressed optimism about gaining unprecedented exposure in Dubai and hoped to visit learning institutions abroad for benchmarking.
“Since authorities informed us that we had been selected for the trip, the anticipation and excitement has been sky-rocketing each day,” Waithaka said. “I couldn’t fall asleep last night. I just kept checking the watch waiting for the day to break.”
He praised MP Nyoro for the programme, which he said opened opportunities they would otherwise never access.
Catherine Kamau from Githuguya Primary School, who has never visited Dubai, said she was looking forward to creating lasting memories.
“I plan to buy a nice chain as a souvenir from the trip. I will also work harder to have many more trips in future,” she said.
The programme is part of the broader Kiharu Fanikisha initiative, which also sponsors youths through short courses in local vocational training institutes.
“But because the programme cannot be covered by NGCDF alone, we look for extra funds from other sources to facilitate it,” Nyoro explained.
In 2023, the MP also launched the Kiharu Masomo Bora programme, which has tiled all 112 public primary schools and subsidized fees for day secondary school students. Authorities provide students with free porridge and lunch six days a week, including chapati every last Friday of the month.
