Motorists in Nairobi will have to plan their routes in advance, as a section of Mombasa Road will be temporarily closed on Sunday, November 30, 2025, due to the annual World AIDS Day half-marathon.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced that the stretch between Nyayo National Stadium Roundabout and Museum Hill Interchange will be closed from 6:00 am to 10:30 am. It called on motorists to adhere to traffic management instructions as well as consider alternative routes to avoid delays in traffic flow.
The temporary closure is to ensure safety for the participants of the 21-kilometre half-marathon. “This is to allow for a 21-Km half-marathon in commemoration of World AIDS Day, 2025, to take place. KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the authority added.
World AIDS Day, commemorated on December 1 of every year, remembers those who died of HIV/AIDS, celebrates accomplishments in treatment and prevention, and shows solidarity with people living with the virus and their families. The event, organized by the Ministry of Health through the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC) in collaboration with county governments, development partners, and civil society, will be marked this year at Nyayo National Stadium on November 30.
The event carries the theme, “One Race, One Goal: Ending AIDS among Adolescents and Young People,” highlighting efforts to protect the demographic most vulnerable to new HIV infections. Besides the 21-kilometre half-marathon, participants can engage in a 10-kilometre road race for runners, a 5-kilometre corporate challenge, and a 2-kilometre children’s race.
This will be complemented by various activities at the county level, including wellness walks, football tournaments, community races, candle-lighting ceremonies, memorial vigils, and free health interventions such as medical camps, HIV testing, and counselling services. The symbolic tree-planting exercises will also be a way of driving the message of hope and sustainability.
“The event themed ‘One Race; One Goal’ is momentous in the continued work to end AIDS-related deaths by 2030, reduce new HIV infections affecting young people aged 15 to 24, intensify treatment adherence, and spotlight the end to teenage pregnancy and gender-based violence,” said Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga.
The NSDCC has called on corporations, organisations, and partners to join the half-marathon, which continues to promote active living, solidarity, and Kenya’s nationwide commitment to ending AIDS.
