A woman in Kursi village, Garissa County, apparently managed to domesticate a cheetah for nearly two years before the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) intervened.
In a statement on Thursday, October 23, KWS said the compassionate woman had rescued the stranded cheetah cub and lovingly raised it as her own by feeding, bathing, and even leashing it like a pet.
The Wildlife protection service learned of the extraordinary act of kindness through its Community & Wildlife Service Division. KWS however noted that while the woman’s gesture were noble, keeping wildlife even out of love is against the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act (WCMA), which protects wild animals and ensures their wellbeing in their natural habitats.
KWS officers in Garissa took the cheetah and handed it over to veterinary experts for a full health check to ensure it was in good condition. They also collected samples for laboratory testing, and administered treatment for parasite control.
The cheetah was moved to the Nairobi Safari Walk and placed under expert care.
“Now under expert care at the Nairobi Safari Walk, the cheetah continues to thrive as part of our conservation and education efforts. We deeply appreciate the Good Samaritan’s compassion and remind all Kenyans that true coexistence means protecting wildlife where they belong – in the wild,” KWS said.
