Sifuna Demands Compensation for Victims of Raila Odinga Body Viewing Tragedy | BossNana International Radio

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has called for compensation to the families of victims who lost their lives during the public viewing of the late Raila Odinga’s body at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani as well as Nyayo Stadium.

Sifuna, in a statement to the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, requested a comprehensive report detailing the circumstances that led to the tragic deaths of atleast five mourners during the two-day national mourning period.

The ODM Sec-Gen challenged the committee to determine the exact number of fatalities and injuries, including a detailed breakdown of the causes of death in each case. Sifuna is also seeking justice and compensation for all those who were injured.

The senator also put the police force on the spot, saying that if police bullets caused any of the deaths, the authorities should disclose the progress of investigations and ensure that those responsible are brough to book.

“Where police bullets were the cause, the Committee should provide an update on investigations to establish culpability for immediate prosecution,” Sifuna demanded.

“The committee should address secondly, the measures in place to ensure that compensation for deaths and injuries from the two consecutive days will be extended to the families of the departed.”

A postmortem report has since revealed that the three people who died at the Moi International Kasarani Stadium were shot in the chest and head as security teams tried to stop a mob from accessing a VIP section area where Odinga’s body was being prepared for public viewing on October 16, 2025.

Two others died at the Nyayo Stadium in a stampede and more than 300 people sustained various injuries in the melee.

Three were killed at Kasarani and two at Nyayo Stadium. “There were three males and two females, young adults. On two of them, we have found penetrating gunshot wounds to the head, with severe damage to the brain.”

“A third victim had a gunshot wound that penetrated through the chest and abdomen, causing tendon injuries to both chest and abdominal organs. The fourth victim, from Nyayo Stadium, died from what we call ‘fixed here’, a condition consistent with suffocation,” said Government Pathologist Bernard Midia, who conducted the exercise at the City Mortuary in Nairobi.
