A Malindi multi-agency security team has intercepted a bus headed for Lamu and seized a massive consignment of cannabis hidden in passengers’ luggage.
Police impounded the Tawakal Bus Service bus, KDN 368W, along the Sabaki River Bridge on a spot check. The bus was traveling from Nairobi to Lamu when the crew discovered two huge sacks of cannabis sativa concealed among second-hand clothes packed in the luggage compartment.
As detectives focused on the suspicious bags, one of the passengers – allegedly the owner of the drugs – made a daring bid to escape, running away before police could apprehend him.
The bus driver and conductor were arrested and are assisting police with investigations as a manhunt for the escaped fugitive gathers momentum.
The seized narcotics have been secured as evidence, with detectives trying to trace the source and point of destination of the illegal cargo.
The police have since warned operators of public transport to remain vigilant against drug traffickers utilizing passenger buses to transport narcotics on the Nairobi–Lamu route.
