Relief as Government Finally Pays for 633 Doctors’ Specialization Courses

Doctors who spent years chasing unpaid postgraduate tuition have a reason to smile after the Ministry of Health confirmed it had cleared the entire 2018-2024 backlog.

KMPDU Secretary-General Dr Davji Atellah said the approvals cover 633 specialists whose training stalled after the State stopped funding several key disciplines.

“Today marks a significant milestone: all postgraduate fees for the period 2018–2024 have been approved for payment, covering a total of 633 doctors,” he said in a statement.

The backlog dates back to 2018, when the Treasury first settled arrears for 420 government-sponsored registrars. But the training committee stopped meeting the next year, and sponsorship was paused for obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics and surgery, leaving hundreds of doctors in limbo.

Repeated lobbying by the union revived the process. On top of the 420 already paid, the ministry has now approved sponsorship for a further 211 doctors during the 2024/25 and 2025/26 financial years.

Doctors who completed their training without reimbursement will also receive their dues.

The August 25 letter to KMPDU is the latest step in implementing the Return-to-Work Formula signed on May 8, 2024, that ended a nationwide strike.
