Kericho Governor Erick Mutai is once again staring down the barrel of impeachment after a new motion seeking his removal was officially tabled in the County Assembly.
Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony submitted the motion to the Clerk’s office, attaching supporting documents and a list of signatures from MCAs endorsing the bid to oust Mutai from office.
The Clerk, after reviewing the documents, confirmed the motion met all the requirements under Standing Order No. 70 and has since forwarded it to the Assembly Business Committee for scheduling.
The Speaker of the County Assembly also affirmed the motion’s validity, stating: “The proposed motion complies with our Standing Order No. 70 and will be scheduled accordingly.”
Though the specifics of the charges are not disclosed, sources indicate the motion is driven by issues of governance and accountability within the county government.
This marks the second impeachment bid against Governor Mutai. The first motion, filed into the Senate late last year 2024, was stumped by the Senate on a technical ground before it could get off.
If the Assembly passes the present motion with the required majority, the case will be referred to the Senate for consideration.
Under the law, Governor Mutai will be granted the opportunity to present his defense – first before the County Assembly, and, if escalated, before the Senate as well. The political temperature in Kericho is once again on the rise as the county braces for another round of leadership scrutiny.
