Maai Mahiu Child Sex Trade: Murkomen Takes Action After BBC Exposé | BossNana International Radio

Cabinet Secretary for Internal Affairs Kipchumba Murkomen has strongly condemned the shocking revelations of child sexual exploitation in Maai Mahiu, Nakuru County, that were unearthed in a new BBC documentary. The investigative piece has stirred national outrage by uncovering a child trafficking syndicate operating in the area, triggering swift reactions from top government officials.

When he addressed the public at a Jukwaa la Usalama meeting in Kericho on August 7, 2025, Murkomen termed the offenses as serious and unacceptable. He assured Kenyans that the government would act with speed and with swiftness to eliminate the vice.

“Trafficking in persons, including children for sexual exploitation, as recently exposed by the BBC, is a serious crime we are confronting,” he stated.

To strengthen the fight against human trafficking, Murkomen announced plans to expand the Anti-Narcotics Unit to include a specialized team that will focus exclusively on sex trafficking cases. He also revealed that the next National Police Service (NPS) recruitment will incorporate officers specifically trained to handle trafficking of both children and adults.

“In the next NPS recruitment, we will factor in a section of police to deal with trafficking in persons,” he said.

Murkomen further cited related crimes like gender-based violence and defilement, which he said still occur in counties such as Kericho. He appealed to families and communities to abandon the culture of silence and report such incidents actively,  even when the perpetrators are family members.

“We urge the public to help in reporting such cases, especially where family members are the perpetrators,” he added.

To protect victims and whistleblowers, Murkomen guaranteed that the government will institute robust witness protection. He emphasized that protecting the whistleblowers is essential in order to provide justice and break the exploitation chain.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch a full-scale investigation into the claims in seven days. The ODPP noted that protection of children and administering justice is not just a rule of law but a constitutional one that must be adhered to without compromise.
