Two men were on Wednesday charged in a Nairobi court for allegedly stealing blood collection equipment worth over Ksh1.1 million from Kenyatta National Hospital.
The suspects, Henry Theuri and Erick Otieno Omedo, are accused of stealing four cartons containing 24 automated blood collection kits and one carton of ordinary blood bags. The items, valued at Ksh1,125,870, are owned by the Nairobi Region Blood Transfusion Centre..
Prosecutors allege that the incident took place on July 29, 2025, within the hospital compound. In addition to the joint theft charges, Omedo faces another charge of dealing in suspected stolen goods. According to the prosecution, the two men allegedly retained the medical supplies unlawfully, raising concerns about internal security at the country’s largest health institutions.
Appearing before Magistrate Benmark Ekhubi, both accused persons denied the charges and requested the court to consider lenient bail terms.
Magistrate Ekhubi released them on a Ksh400,000 bond each, with the option of a Ksh200,000 cash bail.
The case is set to be mentioned in court again in two weeks, as investigations continue.
