Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna questioned why Kenya Kwanza leaders seemed angry, particularly with him, as he spoke at a requiem Mass for the late Ambassador Buridi Nabwera on Wednesday, October 21.
Sifuna said government leaders and their allies had repeatedly insulted him. He welcomed veteran politician Francis Ole Kaparo’s call for politicians to stop trading insults.
“The person standing in front of you is a victim and the recipient of the heaviest insults from everybody in government today, and I am happy that Ole Kaparo, as an elder statesman, has put out the call for everybody to stop insults in politics.
“I do not understand why everybody in the government is angry. People are upset. You ask questions about housing; they call you Mr Empty, instant coffee, mafala, they tell us that we have no agenda nor brains,” Sifuna stated.
He accused pro-government leaders of hypocrisy, saying they called for peace at churches and funerals but insulted opposition figures at rallies.
Sifuna also rejected claims that Linda Mwananchi leaders planned to cause chaos at Nabwera’s funeral. He said his team would avoid trading insults with government leaders and instead focus on public issues.
“I want to make this clear. As Linda Mwananchi, it is not our intention to disrupt public meetings or funerals even if we are disrespected. When the insults come, we intend to draw back the debate to the issues of the day,” Sifuna stated.
The Linda Mwananchi leader also addressed criticism of his meeting with Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua in Wamunyoro. Sifuna said efforts to isolate a region were tribal and regressive and vowed to restore the sense of national unity he said Kenyans felt in 1963.
“Yesterday, some people saw me somewhere with someone, and somehow they are telling us that there is a region in this country where none of us is supposed to associate with. I want to assure that we will restore the feeling that was in our country in 1963,” he added.
