Former President Uhuru Kenyatta openly questioned the legitimacy of President William Ruto’s victory in the 2022 General Election, asserting that the late Raila Odinga won the presidential race.
Speaking during a Jubilee Party National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Nairobi, Kenyatta revealed that he still harbors deep doubts about the official election results that brought his former deputy to power.
“Tulifanya kila kitu kumsaidia Baba awe Rais wa Jamhuri yetu ya Kenya. Na kura akapata, na mimi mpaka wa leo najua ya kwamba yeye ndiye alishinda hiyo kura. Tunajua vile mambo ilienda, na hatutaki iende hivyo tena,” Kenyatta said.
(Translation: “We did everything to help Baba become the president of our Republic of Kenya. And he got the votes, and up to today, I know that he is the one who won that election. We know how things went, and we do not want it to go that way again.”)
The former Head of State pointed to the parliamentary and county numbers achieved by the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party as a reason to question the final presidential outcome.
“How can you say you won yet we have most Members of Parliament, Senators, and Governors? How could you say we lost? We know how things went down,” he said.
Official results from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) recorded William Ruto’s win with 7,176,141 votes (50.49%), while Raila Odinga gathered 6,942,930 votes (48.85%).
Clashing over Kenya Kwanza’s Record
Kenyatta also hit back at President Ruto and Kenya Kwanza leaders, accusing the current administration of using him as a scapegoat for their own governance failures instead of delivering results to the public.
“We accepted that they won. Four years later, it is still Uhuru this and Uhuru that. But when things are not working, you start blaming someone else. Kenyans are smart, they know,” Kenyatta said.
He also dismissed critics who accused him of failing to secure a win for his preferred candidate in 2022, urging political figures to focus on issue-based campaigns rather than personal attacks ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“I am shocked to hear people saying that we did not help Baba, saying that Uhuru Kenyatta did not win. I was not the one at the ballot; I was just Raila’s handyman,” he noted. “Using dirty politics will not take us anywhere; let nobody try to divide us. What does it help you with? Share your manifesto.”
Addressing criticisms from government allies who labeled him a political “sponsor,” Kenyatta defended his right to contribute to the national discourse.
“We want to look for leaders who will bring services to citizens and reduce corruption. I cannot engage in insults with them…I do not have time for that. I want to unite with all of you, for Jubilee to unite with other Kenyans, and for us to chart the way forward for Kenya,” he said.
Endorsing Fred Matiang’i and Restructuring Jubilee
Looking ahead to the 2027 polls, Kenyatta announced his full backing for former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, praising his track record and commitment to nationalist politics.
“He is respectful, he is not corrupt, he loves Kenyans, and he is a hard worker,” he noted.
He highlighted Matiang’i’s potential to break away from divisive political tactics.
“I am supporting Matiang’i because we want to bring an end to tribal politics. I have looked at him and seen a man of wisdom, not a man of corruption, but a man of work,” Kenyatta said.
Kenyatta urged Kenyan youth to resist political exploitation and underscored his respect for constitutional term limits, confirming that he has no intentions of seeking elective office again.
“As Uhuru, I have asked Kenyans for the presidential vote three times. The Constitution says two terms. I respect the law and the Constitution. To say Uhuru will not be president does not mean Jubilee is finished,” he added.
To prepare the Jubilee Party for upcoming political contests, Kenyatta announced plans to step back from leadership and hand over the party reins ahead of the National Delegates Convention (NDC).
“I have decided to step down from that top position and become a senior advisor, since I am still here. I will remain a senior member of Jubilee in the meantime as we wait for the NDC. My younger brother should take up that position, and we organise ourselves for the work of 2027. That is not running away, that is planning ahead,” he said.
