Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja highlighted urban infrastructure upgrades, the expansion of the Dishi na County school feeding program, and healthcare modernization as three key benchmarks of his administration during the debut episode of his podcast on Thursday.
Speaking during the launch of Nairobi, Let’s Talk, a weekly digital forum aimed at engaging city residents, Sakaja asserted that Nairobi has undergone visible transformation since he took office.
Urban Restoration in the Central Business District
Sakaja pointed to infrastructural and structural improvements across Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) as primary evidence of progress. He noted that investments in paved walkways and updated street lighting have improved pedestrian movement and overall public order.
“First place I’ll take you to the CBD. It’s different. There’s order, there’s dignity, there’s paved walkways, there’s proper Victorian lights,” Sakaja said.
Expansion of the Dishi na County Program
The governor identified the Dishi na County initiative as his second landmark achievement, pointing to its direct impact on public school attendance and child nutrition. The program delivers daily subsidized lunches at Ksh5 per meal across hundreds of public primary schools and Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers.
“Second, I’ll take you to any school at lunchtime and show you children eating. It was never there, being fed at five shillings. That is different,” Sakaja stated.
Expanding County Intensive Care Facilities
Sakaja listed local healthcare expansion as his third core milestone, specifically highlighting the establishment of a specialized neonatal intensive care unit (ICU) at Mbagathi Hospital. He noted that prior to his tenure, county-run hospitals lacked independent ICU capacity, relying heavily on national referral centers like Kenyatta National Hospital.
“Thirdly, I’ll take you to Mbagathi, to the neonatal ICU. Nairobi had zero ICUs before I became governor. None. Zero,” Sakaja said.
Beyond his top three highlights, Sakaja pointed to ongoing pedestrian infrastructure projects, including the walkway corridor extending from ABC Place toward Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), designed with dedicated accessibility features for persons with disabilities.
“If you just want three, I can go to ten,” Sakaja added, inviting citizens to review completed county projects firsthand.
