Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a statement claiming to know critical details regarding the recent abduction of Standard Media Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich.
Kiprotich was accosted by armed assailants along the Gilgil–Nakuru Road on Tuesday night before being dumped near Masinga Dam early Wednesday morning.
According to Gachagua, Kiprotich was preparing an investigative exposé detailing how funds intended for thousands of Mau evictees from the Kipsigis community were allegedly looted. The Democracy for the Citizens (DCP) party leader alleged that National Government Administration officials orchestrated the scheme under the direction of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Raymond Omollo, routing funds through brokers and proxies.
“Alex was to publish an exposé giving a blow-by-blow account of how the funds have been stolen, leaving the evictees helpless and in anguish,” Gachagua stated.
Claims of a Government-Led Plot
Gachagua alleged that top state officials, including President William Ruto and CS Murkomen, planned the journalist’s abduction during a late-night meeting on Monday to prevent the story from airing. He further claimed Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director Mohamed Amin was instructed to place Kiprotich under 24-hour surveillance using a covert squad led by retired officer Zachary Kariuki.
“The DCI, Mr. Mohamed Amin, was instructed to put Alex under 24-hour surveillance. The DCI assembled a team headed by one Mr. Zachary Kariuki, who, though retired, has been recalled by Amin to coordinate this squad trained in abductions, killings, and cover-ups,” he said.
“This is the team that abducted Alex Kiprotich and was instructed to abandon the earlier plan to eliminate him after the abduction was captured live and provoked public outrage,” Gachagua claimed, alleging the unit comprises 60 rogue police officers operating as an abduction squad.
Questions Over Police Independence
Gachagua dismissed the ongoing National Police Service (NPS) investigation into the incident, claiming Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja lacks full authority over security operations.
“You are clueless about the operations of the National Police Service. I do have more information as to the happenings in the service than you do,” Gachagua addressed Kanja, alleging that CS Murkomen and Raymond Omollo issue direct orders to Deputy Inspector General Eliud Langat and DCI Director Mohamed Amin.
Analysis of Kiprotich’s dashcam footage identified a Subaru with registration plate KDG 125E used during the abduction. A check on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) portal revealed the plate was previously registered to a Honda Fit owned by Alex Maunda Wanyonyi in December 2021.
This marks the second attempt on Kiprotich’s safety this year. Following an attempted abduction in June reported at Menengai Police Station, the Standard Group linked the vehicle involved to officers attached to the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau in Nakuru.
IG Douglas Kanja has denied police involvement in the latest incident and directed the Anti-Abduction Unit to conduct a thorough investigation to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
