Political strategist Pauline Njoroge has called for a restructured opposition leadership model, urging political parties to avoid an “endless table of principals” while building a united coalition to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
In a statement shared on Monday, September 21, 2026, Njoroge proposed a two-tier organizational framework designed to balance broad democratic participation with swift executive decision-making.
A Four-Member Executive Center
Njoroge, who recently exited the Jubilee Party to join the Edwin Sifuna-led Linda Mwananchi political movement, argued that holding top leadership positions within the coalition must depend on regional support bases and national influence rather than party registration alone.
She identified four leaders who command the requisite political constituencies to serve at the principal level: Edwin Sifuna, Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i
“Each commands a significant political constituency and brings to the table the electoral weight necessary to shape a viable national coalition.”
The United Nations Analogy
To illustrate her proposal, Njoroge drew a comparison to the governance structure of the United Nations. She recommended establishing a broad Coalition Parties Council where all constituent party leaders participate, while delegating high-stakes decisions to the smaller executive team.
“Every party in the opposition has earned the legitimate right to participate in shaping the emerging coalition. That participation should be institutionalised through a broad Coalition Parties Council, bringing together the leaders of all constituent parties,” she said. “But inclusion does not mean that every party leader must automatically become a principal.”
Explaining the operational benefits of a smaller executive core, Njoroge added:
“The underlying principle is simple: broad participation provides legitimacy, while a smaller executive structure provides agility. A successful coalition must achieve both.”
Shaping the 2027 Coalition Debate
Njoroge’s proposal arrives during an intense period of political realignments across Kenya’s opposition landscape. On the same day, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced that the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition unanimously agreed to rebrand as the Ukombozi Alliance.
By calling for a streamlined top organ, Njoroge urged opposition factions to resolve internal leadership rivalries promptly to present a focused, disciplined alternative to the governing Kenya Kwanza administration entering the 2027 campaign cycle.
“Therefore, the opposition does not need an endless table of principals. It needs an inclusive coalition supported by a lean, credible, and effective centre of leadership,” she said.
