A drug trafficking operation ended in a crash along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway on Monday, September 21, 2026, after an SUV carrying narcotics collided with a heavy commercial truck.
Police officers from Nakuru Central Police Station recovered six sacks of bhang weighing 241.5 kilograms with an estimated street value of KSh 7,245,000 from the wreckage of a Mazda CX-5 between the Shinners Boys school area and Mbaruk.
Preliminary findings show that the Mazda CX-5 was traveling from Nakuru toward Nairobi when the driver attempted an overtaking maneuver. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an oncoming Scania trailer.
The impact spun the SUV and severely damaged its front section. Rather than waiting for assistance or emergency services, the driver abandoned the wreckage and fled on foot.
When police arrived at the crash site to clear the scene and secure the stretch of highway, they inspected the damaged SUV and discovered six sacks packed inside.
Officers impounded the vehicle, transferred the exhibits to Nakuru Central Police Station, and handed the case over to the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) for further forensic analysis.
Detectives are tracking leads tied to registration KDW 640U to identify the vehicle owner and map out the supply network involved in transporting the consignment toward Nairobi. Officers have also launched a manhunt to arrest the fleeing driver.
