Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has raised concerns over the alleged misuse of an official county government vehicle, claiming he personally trailed a driver attached to Deputy Governor David Kinaniri, who was using the car to ferry women late at night.
Kahiga explained that he spotted the county vehicle moving through Nyeri town outside official working hours, between 11:00 PM and midnight, prompting him to follow it.
According to the governor, the vehicle stopped near a local market where several women boarded before the driver ferried them to various destinations across town.
Kahiga stated that he confronted his deputy over the incident, but Kinaniri maintained he was unaware that his assigned vehicle was being operated after hours.
The Nyeri boss also questioned the vehicle’s high fuel consumption, noting that he had previously assumed the elevated fuel costs stemmed from Kinaniri’s official political engagements.
“I was driving at around 11 or 12 midnight hapo then naona gari yetu inadriviwa ikisimamishwa Wendo. Warembo wanatoka wanaingia, wengine wanaingizwa huko. Nikauliza DG; yeye anasema hata hajui maneno hayo,” Kahiga said.
“Aliwabeba akaanza kwenda akiwadrop kila mtu; huyu hapa, mwingine pale… Mimi nafikiria mafuta mingi inatumika, DG akifanya campaigns kumbe ni warembo.”
(Translation: “I was driving around 11:00 PM or midnight when I saw our vehicle being driven and parked around Wendo. Women were getting out and others were getting in. I asked the Deputy Governor, but he said he knew nothing about it. The driver picked them up and started dropping everyone off – one here, another there. I thought all that fuel was being used for the DG’s campaigns, but it turned out to be for women.”)
Crackdown on Public Vehicle Misuse
The revelation comes amid an ongoing national push to tighten oversight on public assets and curb resource wastage within government agencies.
In August 2026, the national government announced plans to roll out a real-time telematics tracking system across all official fleets. The system is designed to monitor live vehicle locations, verify driver identity, track fuel efficiency, monitor total mileage, and log vehicle maintenance history.
