Sharon Otieno’s Family Backs Leniency for Convicted Ex-Governor Obado | BossNana International Radio

Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado has asked the High Court to hand down a lenient sentence following his conviction for the murder of Sharon Otieno, telling the court he prefers a non-custodial term.

Presenting a pre-sentencing social inquiry report, Obado asked the court for mercy. He pointed to his advancing age, health complications, and the prolonged duration of the trial as grounds for leniency. He told probation officers he has no prior criminal record and cited hypertension and persistent left shoulder pain as medical conditions supporting his request.

Obado Maintains He Played No Part in Sharon’s Death

In interviews with probation officers, Obado maintained that he played no part in Sharon’s murder, though he acknowledged their past intimate relationship. He said that while he respects the court’s verdict, he disagrees with the finding that he participated in her death. He also expressed remorse over the tragedy and affirmed his readiness to support her family and pursue reconciliation.

Obado explained that he had intended to take responsibility for Sharon’s pregnancy once DNA testing verified paternity following the child’s birth. He said he had directed his personal assistant, Michael Oyamo, to handle logistics regarding Sharon, including scheduling meetings with her.

Sharon’s Family Does Not Object to Leniency

In an unexpected turn, Sharon’s family informed probation officers that they do not object to the court granting Obado a lenient sentence. Citing his ongoing financial assistance and welcoming efforts toward reconciliation, the family urged the judge to allow him to fulfill the pledges he made to her parents. They pointed out that his support would help ease the financial strain they have endured since her passing.

The High Court plans to evaluate the probation report alongside the victim impact statement and final arguments from both prosecution and defense before determining the final sentence. The next court session is scheduled for September 16, 2026.
